Manchester City’s return to the summit of the Premier League table for the time being has ensured that fans can expect an exciting finish to the season.
The ‘Citizens’ defeated Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park, which has pushed them to top spot, albeit with an extra game over Liverpool.
With just over a dozen matches remaining this season, getting three points is key, and any hurdle can be costly.
The race for the title is down to three sides, with Tottenham also in the running, five points behind City. A victory over Leicester City at home on Sunday night would put Spurs on 60 points and one game away from potentially jumping to top spot. Their goal difference may restrict them however, as it is currently 21 goals behind City’s.
The run home for these clubs are similar – all three are still in action in the Champions League. However, only City remain in both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, which adds more fixtures to their calendar.
In terms of Premier League matches, there are some must watch games that will have a big impact on the title race.
On Sunday night, City host fourth-placed Chelsea, who last beat them 2-0 in December. Pep Guardiola’s men would hope that this result is not repeated, as it could prove costly.
Towards the end of February, Liverpool travel to Old Trafford to face in-form Manchester United. The acquisition of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their new manager has transformed United into a force again.
Shortly after, Tottenham face Chelsea and Arsenal consecutively, which will determine their stance in the title race.
In mid-March, the second Manchester Derby will take place at Old Trafford and it will be difficult to predict the winner of this clash based on both clubs’ recent form.
The first day of April will then see Liverpool and Tottenham face off at Anfield, with the winner of the Premier League possibly being revealed by then.
April will continue to deliver the goods, as Liverpool host Chelsea and City play Tottenham in consecutive weeks. Anything can happen during this time and these fixtures will make or break the title race.
The added Champions League fixtures to their schedules will make things even more interesting, as fatigue and rotation will likely come into play.
Rather than a one-horse race like last season, this edition of the Premier League has certainly delivered.
