A last-minute Adam Taggart equaliser has cost the Western Sydney Wanderers their first win in over a month as the cellar-dwellers couldn’t be separated at Suncorp Stadium overnight.
Western Sydney were flying early as a cracking Roly Bonevacia strike gave the away side the lead in the opening twenty minutes – completing a personal milestone in the process by scoring against each A-League opposition.
Markus Babbel’s men continued to take control of the game and were rewarded when Kwame Yeboah doubled their lead against his former side which heaped the misery on the languishing Roar outfit.
Brisbane struggled to get back into the game for much of the second-half as the Wanderers began to set-up shop defensively and look to close out the game.
However, an inspired change from Darren Davies saw Danish import Tobias Mikkelsen enter the fray and the Roar reaped the dividends after his introduction.
Mikkelsen was on hand to pull one back mid-way through stoppage time after some lovely build up play from Taggart saw the Dane put through on goal with a lovely backheel and an equally sublime finish.
With time expiring, the Wanderers had all but sealed the result but when Vedran Janjetovic mishandled a back-pass – the ball was subsequently put out for a Roar corner which gave them one more chance to steal a point.
From the resulting corner, Taggart rose highest to nod home his tenth goal of the season and rescue a point for the struggling Roar.
For Western Sydney, it’s the same story of losing a late lead and in the process leaving Babbel with more questions than answers regarding how to fix their languishing prospects.
The Wanderers will host the Newcastle Jets next Friday night as they look for win number three while the Roar travel to Adelaide to face the Reds on Saturday evening.
