Monaco’s current coaching situation looks like a two person game of musical chairs.
In October 2018, Leonardo Jardim was sacked after a less than impressive start to the Ligue 1 season. Monaco sat in 18th and results weren’t forthcoming in any competitions.
In came Thierry Henry; his return to the club he spent seven years at – at both youth and senior level – was much hyped.
But the results didn’t get any better. Monaco now sit in 19th, deeply entrenched in the relegation zone, with Henry’s 20 game stint in charge only producing two wins in the league, five in all competitions.
So after 104 days, Monaco made the decision not to sack, but to suspend Henry.
However suspension appears to be a stop on the way to a sacking.
It is a seemingly unprecedented move. The manager’s position is usually pretty straight forward: they either have a job or they don’t. In this case it is less clear.
Franck Passi, Henry’s assistant, has been tasked with the caretaker role but the drama does not end there.
There is plenty of talk surrounding Henry’s replacement should this suspension reach its assumed destination in sacking.
The name coming up most is Monaco’s 2016-17 title winning manager who just so happens to be the very same man who was sacked only three months ago, Leonardo Jardim.
Can Monaco sort out this mess and stay in the top flight?
