Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Manchester United after identifying a number of issues at the club.

The 55-year-old took over in May 2016 and led United to a League Cup and Europa League title, but are behind rivals Liverpool by 19 points in the English Premier League, closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table.

Having spent nearly £400m on players with little to no progress, the board decided to make the change.

The Red Devils will need to pay the Portuguese boss close to £18m, to release him from his contract.

A United statement said: “A caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.

“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.”

Caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer has been appointed to lead the side for their clash against Cardiff City on the weekend.
